Hack 1 - Get Cashback

Did you know you can get cashback simply from shopping online?

Even from major retailers like eBay and Amazon!

All you need to do is shop via a cashback website and you can get free money!

For example, before you shop, rather than going to the Amazon website directly - simply visit the cashback website, search for Amazon, click the link to access Amazon via the cashback website, then start shopping.

Because you accessed Amazon via the cashback website, they’ll track your purchase and give you a cashback reward!

Then once you’ve accumulated enough cashback, you can withdraw it to your bank account.

I’ve received over $350 cashback so far!

Best of all, once you sign up, this extra step only takes 2 seconds!

Currently there are 2 major cashback websites that operate in Australia - Cashrewards and ShopBack. Check them out below. (UPDATE - As of 8th September 2025, Cashrewards is no longer available.)

Hack 2 - Always try a coupon code

I don’t know about you, but I hate paying full price.

Unfortunately, sometimes you want something NOW and don’t want to have to wait for a sale. Which is why coupon or discount codes are great!

Often many companies will offer them, but how do you find them?

Here are some tricks to sniff them out:

1. Their Website

First place to look for a discount code is the company’s website. Even grocery websites like Coles and Woolworths will post discount codes right on their front page!

2. Facebook or Instagram

Next place to look is the company’s Facebook or Instagram pages. I learnt this the hard way, when one time I prepaid for an experience only to realise they were advertising 25% off right on their Instagram page, doh!

  1. Newsletter

Next up, check if the company has a newsletter. Often if you sign up, they’ll send you a discount code. (Bonus Hack - If you don’t like spam, create a “burner” email address. I have one that I use to sign up for everything. So you can keep your “real” email address, squeaky clean.)

4. Coupon websites

Tired of snooping around? There are websites out there that do all the hard work for you! Places like OzBargain, Coupon Follow and WeThrift aggregate all the coupon codes in one place. Going one step further, Honey App is an extension you can add to your browser that will try all the discount codes for you at once. (Saves you copying and pasting 100 different codes - winning!)

5. Add something to your cart and wait…

Companies love to entice you to buy, buy, buy. So sometimes, if you add something to your cart, and leave an email address, they’ll send you a cart reminder and a coupon to tempt you to finish off your purchase.

Hack 3 - Check out your credit card perks

If you have a credit card, check out your perks. Many credit card companies offer cashback simply for shopping.

American Express for example, regularly add new offers from a variety of companies including grocery, clothing, transport, hotel and accommodation.

Simply log into your online account, scroll to the bottom of the page and add the offers to your card!

BONUS HACK

Isn’t it the worst when you make a purchase, only to see a week later that it’s on sale and you could’ve saved a tonne of money?!

Well bonus hack, is to know when sales are about to happen!

Below are the common sale dates every year in Australia. Bookmark this page so you can easily refer back to it.

  • Afterpay Day - usually March and August

  • Click Frenzy - May

  • eBay Plus Weekend - May
